The Art of Draperies

My take on drapes is that they are meant to soften a space, highlight the window and create a beautiful backdrop for everything else in the room.  However, there is so much more to designing the perfect drape than one may think. I always start by asking if the drapes will be functioning or stationary. Once that is determined, we can decide the length. The length is subjective to what appeals to the client and what look we want to achieve. Next, we move to design — this is the fun part!  Drapery trends change just like everything else, but I try to encourage my client’s to stay within their comfort zone. We can keep a very simple and clean panel with soft pleats or we can go as bold as to mix multiple fabrics and trims and go with more dramatic pleats.  Almost any fabric can be used, but there are pros and cons to every type. After those aspects are taken into consideration, it’s time to discuss lining. Lining may seem like an unimportant part to the drape but it actually plays a very important role. Lining protects your fabric from sun damage as well as creates a clean look from the outside of your home. Black out lining is ideal for theatre rooms and bedrooms but is more bulky than others. Lining can also change the color of the face fabric as the sun comes through so it’s always important to know how the color of lining you choose will affect the overall presentation in the room. Lastly, the jewelry to it all — the hardware! SO. MANY. OPTIONS!! When I’m consulting with regards to hardware, we have to decide functionality, aesthetic, budget,  and the most obvious — color.  Once the drapes are made and ready to hang, I highly recommend using a professional installer. They are able to accurately and safely mount the hardware and dress them to be magazine worthy!
